About this JPG to PNG converter

Convert one or many JPG photos to PNG. PNG is lossless, so the converted file is a pixel-perfect copy of the decoded JPG and won't lose further quality if you edit and save it again. Images are converted on your device.

How JPG to PNG conversion works

  1. Each JPG is decoded by your browser.
  2. The image is drawn at its original size, respecting the EXIF rotation so photos appear upright.
  3. The pixels are written as a PNG file with lossless compression.

Conversion quality: Exact. Pixels are copied losslessly. Camera metadata (EXIF) is not copied.

When to convert JPG to PNG

  • Editing an image repeatedly without accumulating JPG artefacts
  • Uploading to a site or app that only accepts PNG
  • Preparing an image you will later add transparency to

Limitations to be aware of

  • Converting to PNG can't restore detail the JPG compression already removed.
  • PNG files of photos are usually 2–5× larger than the JPG.
  • EXIF metadata such as camera model and GPS location is not copied to the PNG.

JPG vs PNG

JPG. JPG (JPEG) uses lossy compression tuned for photographs. Files are small, but it has no transparency and quality drops slightly each time a JPG is re-saved.

PNG. PNG uses lossless compression and supports full transparency. It is ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges, but photos saved as PNG are much larger than JPG.

This converter also accepts PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF, SVG files as input.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. It preserves the current quality exactly, but it can't add back detail that was lost when the JPG was created.

Can I convert many images at once?

Yes. Select or drop multiple files and download them individually or as a ZIP.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. JPG has no transparency information, so the PNG will be fully opaque.

Are my files uploaded?

No. This tool reads and processes files directly in your web browser. Nothing is sent to Expensico's servers, and the data is discarded when you close or reload the page.
